Ingredients

  • 4 large russet potatoes, peeled and grated
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion (optional)
  • 2 tbsp olive oil or butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder (optional)
  • 1/2 tsp paprika (optional)

Instructions

  • Rinse the grated potatoes in cold water to remove excess starch.
  • Place the grated potatoes in a clean towel and squeeze out any excess moisture.
  • Heat olive oil or butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
  • Add the grated potatoes to the skillet, pressing them down with a spatula to form an even layer.
  • Cook for about 5-7 minutes on each side, until golden brown and crispy.
  • Season with salt, pepper, and any optional spices.
  • Rest the hashbrowns for 5 minutes to allow the crispy texture to set.
  • Serve hot with your favorite toppings or as a side dish.

Notes

  • Make sure to remove as much moisture as possible from the grated potatoes to achieve crispy results.
  • For extra flavor, you can add finely diced bell peppers, shredded cheese, or cooked bacon to the potatoes before frying.
  • Keep the heat medium to avoid burning while ensuring the hashbrowns cook evenly.
